4. Friuli-Venezia Giulia
Friuli-Venezia Giulia is one of Italy's most important regions for producing characterful white wines. Between the Collio, Karst, and Isonzo rivers, the landscape is incredibly diverse: the Ponca hills, rocky plateaus battered by the Bora wind, and coastal areas. Here, wines with intense minerality, saline notes, and often maceration are produced, thanks in part to Slovenian influence and the tradition of natural winemaking. Indigenous grape varieties like Vitovska and Malvasia coexist with international varieties, which are interpreted in a profoundly territorial way. Many winemakers employ spontaneous fermentation and extended aging, emphasizing the authenticity and identity of the terroir. The result is complex, profound wines of great energy.
